Giclee is a method of high quality printing that is often used to reproduce pieces of artwork. Giclee printing produces a richer, more vibrant and more durable piece than regular canvas or poster printing. Giclee (taken from the French for ‘to squirt’) prints are often referred to as ‘museum quality prints’ because their quality is so high that they wouldn’t look out of place on a museum’s walls.

Giclee prints are created using a high end ink jet printer of much higher quality than those often found in homes and offices, and printed on archival quality papers. This printing method produced rich, vibrant fine art prints that are almost indistinguishable from their original counterparts and could last for up to 100 years. This is where they differ from less expensive prints or posters, which are printed using inferior techniques and only last up to five years.

Large print sizes highlight the difference between giclee prints and other print types. When looked at close up, giclee fine art prints have realistic colours and a lot of definition, similar to that found in high definition photographs. When you look closely at inferior print types, blurred images and a lack of detail is extremely noticeable. This is emphasised when fine art prints are produced in larger sizes.
