The early part of history on this planet found the cave dweller busy out in the wooded areas looking for berries. Perhaps he would find enough to have a satisfying meal. After eating the berries there was usually enough messy berry juice around and when one would put their finger in the juice, they found they could create images of things on the walls. They were able to start leaving part of their history behind for all of us to study. These fingers could have been some of our first pens.

The Chinese tried bamboo reeds, with some success, as their writing instrument of choice. Europeans found that hollow goose quills filled the bill and monks used this method for all of the copying and creating of bibles of the day. The down side of these quills was the fact that they required frequent trimming, because the tips did not hold up well.

Just think what could have been accomplished by the writers of long ago if they had the use of the tools now modernly used. Even the pen holding ink in its own barrel was not created until the late nineteenth century. Their works were finished under much more dire writing conditions than found today.

Pen, pencil and paper appear to go together like peanut butter and jelly. They can be used separately for different reasons, but are inseparable in our minds. These writing tools can be used in crafts with a variety of types and styles of tips, from felt to gel. Calligraphy pens are very specialized in their use, being used to create the most exquisite missives. Wedding and other special announcements are often created by hand in this way, for a special touch.

Many folks who use an ordinary pen and pencils for daily work still pick up a fountain pen to write things most often sent to others or kept for posterity. For some reason, writing with the fountain type pen makes one slow down enough to be able to create the flowery words, twisting and curling across a page. The same effect is not often found using a ball point pen, which have a little roller ball suspended inside of the barrel.

There are many pens and pencils that are produced for special needs people. There are disposable for younger folks just wanting to color or draw for a while and not having to worry about keeping the pen or pencil in some kind of special place.

The highlighter type of pen can be used in studying, if you own the book or manuscript you are studying. These have been a miracle. Reading once, marking important passages and only having to skim back through those pages to catch these yellow lines makes faster studying.

The pen will probably never disappear. It is probably here to stay. Just think about all the modern technology that has come about since the first caveman dipped his finger in berry juice. It has been, and will be in the future, pens and pencils other kinds of writing papers for our use, created because of our needs. There was even a skyscraper built in Riyadh, Arabia that was built to honor the shape of the pen.
