In April this year, large supermarkets will be banned from including tobacco products in their retail display areas. This means they will have to rethink this aspect of their retail design.
Responding to the development, which will also be enforced among smaller firms as of April 2015, supermarket chain Sainsbury's told Retail Gazette that it would be adhering firmly to the new regulations.
A spokesperson remarked: "We will be using gantries in our larger stores to ensure that tobacco products are not on display. Alongside this we will be thoroughly training our colleagues to ensure they comply with the relevant legislation. We are confident that we can meet the requirements of the legislation whilst at the same time still providing great service for customers."
The representative went on to state: "With regard to smaller stores we will of course listen to any feedback we receive from customers, colleagues and the authorities to ensure that by 2015 we again have a solution that not only meets the requirements of the legislation but also ensures we are still able to provide a quality service."
Also commenting on the changes, Co-operative Food noted that it will be "fully compliant" with the legislation by the time it comes into force.
Meanwhile, welcoming the government's move to ban tobacco products in retail display areas, chief executive officer of charity Action on Smoking and Health Deborah Arnott suggested that the change is welcome. She claimed that for too long, displays have promoted cigarettes to children.
Of course, it is not only legal issues that firms must think about when they are engaging in retail design. They also have to consider how best to appeal to consumers and drive sales. Therefore, many organisations seek professional assistance to help ensure they achieve the best possible results and boost profits.
